Design my bottleKassing Method
The Kassing method was born to prevent the loss of breastfeeding when it needed to be combined with bottle feeding. And this is because until the arrival of the Happymami project, with its bottles made to measure for each mother for her baby, all bottles were generic, totally different from each mother’s body. Because they were created to replace breastfeeding, and only the baby’s orography and the best design to facilitate the sucking of the newborn were taken into account.
These generic bottles cause more than 50% of infants who try a generic bottle to lose their breastfeeding, and methods such as Kassing were a stopgap to ensure that breastfeeding was not affected as much. But thanks to the Happymami Project, you now have the opportunity to design the bottle that is most representative of your anatomy, preventing your baby from suffering from the confusion factor and protecting your breastfeeding.
Because for the development of our Happymami bottles, we have taken breastfeeding into account in its totality…. The anatomy of the mother, the speed of The study of breast milk ejection, its phases, the baby’s needs, the type of sucking… An exhaustive study that has led us to develop a bottle that is unique in the world, with attention to detail, in which the protagonist is the mother and her baby.
Design my bottleSo how does the Kassing method work?
We must bear in mind that the babies do not know what a breast is, or what is a bottleThey have reflexes that allow them, for example, to feed themselves, like the search reflexwhich is activated by stimulating the perioral area of the newbornThe other very important reflex for our subject, is the “reflex of the mouth”, opening the mouth towards the stimulated side. sucking reflex which is activated when the oral cavity, especially the palate, is stimulated, initiating the newborn suction movements.
If you are breastfeeding, your baby will learn over time what his mother’s breast looks like, a large or small cup, with a characteristic nipple that he recognizes as soon as he feels it in his mouth, as well as a flow of milk ejection, etc. This is the moment when you feel that you have breastfeeding established. But you need to, for example, because the baby is not gaining enough weight, or you want to introduce a bottle, and without affecting breastfeeding, there are two options.
You can choose a generic bottle totally different from your breast with which our recommendation is that you use the Kassing method. Or you can choose a Happymami bottle, designing the bottle that will best protect your breastfeeding, with which the Kassing method is not necessary. And in case, after reading this post, you decide to choose a generic bottle, we are going to give you the guidelines that recommend this method.
Design my bottleHow to do the Kassing method?
The Kassing method was created by an American breastfeeding consultant Dee Kassing, to help moms who offer a generic bottle to their babies, and prevent them from losing their breastfeeding, and is based on the concept of making your baby have to make “an effort” to feed from the bottle, because of it:
- Use a slow flow nipple:
The recommendation to use a slow flow is so that your baby’s milk does not flow continuously. If you use a Happymami you should not use a lower flux. In order to develop our Happymamis bottles, we studied breastfeeding as a whole. Breast milk ejection, outflow at each stage, baby’s suckling, baby’s needs …. And from there we developed our flows.
So if you have a 4-month-old baby and you put him on a 2-month-old infant formula, the most likely risk is that your baby will reject the bottle. That is why our recommendation is that you take the flow that corresponds to your baby’s age, and follow the guidelines that we will give you when you make your purchase so that your baby takes the bottle without affecting your breastfeeding.
Design my bottle- Position the baby at a 90 degree angle:
The theory behind this indication is to get them to take it slowly and so that the milk does not fall due to gravity. Be careful because sometimes, thinking about doing the Kassing method, when the bottle is not completely full, what happens is that when your baby sucks from the bottle, he does not get any milk, and what he does is swallow air, and suffers from newborn colic, in addition to the tantrum he has for not eating. We know it sounds silly, but it happens more often than we think.
- Stimulates the corner of your baby’s mouth.
Stimulate the corner of your baby’s lips, to trigger your baby’s search reflex and once the mouth is open we introduce the bottle.
- Let it suck 20-30 times and remove from the mouth quickly.
If you use Happymami, do not make these changes, since it is prepared to imitate the mother’s breast.
- Restart the whole process.
Start the process again from the beginning, monitoring your baby’s satiety signals, without forcing, remember that the amount of milk per bottle that you can find in the guides are indicative. Each baby is unique, and we must take into account the baby’s appetite.
