Design your Bottle ®Which bottle is most like the breast?
The bottle most similar to the maternal breast and the best bottle for a newborn is the Happymami custom-designed bottle. The only bottle in the world that is created to measure by each mum for her baby, obtaining the bottle that most closely resembles your breast.
Because all generic bottle brands sell themselves as the closest thing to the maternal breast, but which breast? Yours or mine? Because there are infinite breasts and adapting to you is extremely important to care for your breastfeeding.
What size bottle for a newborn?
The ideal bottle size for a newborn is a capacity of 150 ml. To put this into context, on the first day your baby will take around 20 ml per feed, and it will not be until 3 months that they exceed 150 mls per feed.
How much bottle should a newborn be given?
The amount of milk in a bottle for a newborn will depend on your baby's age, and on whether the feeds are to supplement or to make up a full feed.
If it is for supplementation, your paediatrician will have given you the exact amount that your baby should take; remember to offer the breast first until it is emptied and then give the supplement. An idea you should take on board is “offer the breast thinking that there is no bottle afterwards”. That way you will take the time you need to feed your baby at the breast and afterwards you will give the supplement.
If, on the other hand, it is to make up a full feed, in this case we must take your baby's age into account, and below I leave you some approximate amounts according to age. These amounts of milk in a bottle will also be defined on the tin of formula if you use it. Bear in mind, and many mothers do not check this, that whether you give a bottle with breast milk or formula, the amount will be the same, since the volumes are developed from the capacities of the newborn's stomach, and not from the Kcal needed.
🌟 Ideally you should have at least 2 personalised bottles for everyday use. ✨

How many bottles should a newborn have?
The number of bottles you need for your newborn depends on the type of feeding you are going to offer your baby, because the requirements are not the same for a baby who uses the bottle occasionally, such as a baby who has a bottle every 3 hours to supplement your breastfeeding because the baby is not gaining weight.
In the case of a baby with whom we use the bottle occasionally, or if we want to have a bottle just in case, having one slow-flow bottle for a newborn will be more than enough.
If, on the other hand, we have to offer our little one a bottle every 3 hours because we need to supplement, you will need at least 2 bottles to alternate while one is waiting to be cleaned and the other is prepared; this option can be increased in number for greater convenience.
How often should teats and newborn bottles be changed?
Scientific evidence and the European Standards drawn up by technical committee CTN 172 for childcare, currently in force, indicate that for safety and hygiene reasons they recommend replacing the teats and the bottle as optimal between 4 and 8 weeks, with 90 days being the maximum recommended period of use. Or changing them at the first signs of deterioration or breakage.
These parameters have been based on biodurability (maximum time of permanence without deteriorating); biocompatibility (capacity to induce reactions or toxicity), tendency to encrustation (precipitation of mucoids and crystalloids) and tendency to bacterial adherence.
At Happymami we understand that every case is unique, and always seeking to offer you the best, we made our Happymami bottle from the most resistant and best material for a bottle, latest-generation silicone to give the greatest resistance to the natural wear of using teats and bottles.
What happens if I give a bottle to a newborn?
It all depends on the type of bottle we use, because a newborn baby has many reflexes that help them to “survive”, the so-called innate reflexes. For example the rooting reflex, which consists of the baby opening their mouth when something touches their mouth. And the sucking reflex, which consists of sucking when something touches their palate.
But they do not know what mum's breast is like and as the days go by they will learn to identify it perfectly, establishing your breastfeeding, so using the bottle that most closely resembles your breast will be crucial to prevent your baby's confusion factor and protect your breastfeeding.
Because science warns us, 50% of babies who use a generic bottle suffer the confusion factor and lose their breastfeeding. So, if you need or want to use a bottle with your newborn baby, we should use the one most similar to your breast and the best option will be a custom-designed one.

Design your Bottle ®Which is the best bottle brand for a newborn?
There are currently many bottle brands and we are lucky to have a great variety and great quality on the market. The important thing will be to select the most suitable one for your case.
Without a doubt, to select one bottle or another the best thing is to take several points into consideration. That it is not a generic bottle, and the materials of the bottle itself.
So the best bottle option for a newborn will be a custom-designed Happymami bottle. You prevent your baby's confusion factor, protecting your breastfeeding.
What is more, during the development of our Happymami bottles we took into account all the needs of the mums who used bottles, creating a whole bottle made of food-grade silicone of the highest quality.
A material subjected to strict controls, BPA-free, which are toxins that can be found in plastic, and if it falls, it does not break as happens with glass ones. A bottle cared for down to the smallest detail to offer you the best solution.
In the end the Happymami project has been created by midwives and mums who work every day with mummies like you, and we saw how generic bottles destroy thousands of breastfeedings every day, and we set to work to offer you a real solution, so that you can use a bottle without losing your breastfeeding, resulting in the only custom-designed bottle in the world, the Happymami bottle.
Happymami is the best option ✨ thanks to its personalised approach 🍼 and high-quality materials 🌟.
Which formula is best for the newborn bottle?
Just like bottles, with formula preparations there are numerous brands and with many variations to adapt to the needs of each newborn. That is why there is no best brand or type of milk for a newborn. All of them comply with the requirements of the regulations to be suitable for our babies, and they then depend on what supplements or special features they have for tolerances.
But you have to bear in mind that each milk brand has its own taste, and it may be that a brand you are convinced to buy is not liked by your baby, or that they love it. That is why our recommendation is always to try some type of brand by buying the smallest tin or asking an acquaintance to give you a sample, so you will first assess whether your baby likes that type of milk or not, before buying.
How should you give a newborn a bottle?
There are many approaches to the way of giving a newborn a bottle, but without a doubt the one with the greatest scientific evidence is the one recommended by UPTODATE, an international scientific reference, which makes the following recommendation
- Place your baby in the most upright position possible
- Stroke your baby's mouth with the bottle teat and when they open their mouth we introduce the bottle
- Tilt the bottle upwards so that the teat is partially full of milk, and let your baby suckle for a few minutes (Do not put the bottle horizontal, because if there is little milk, the teat will not empty and when your baby sucks no milk will fall, making it an unpleasant experience for your baby)
- When your baby pauses, tilt the bottle downwards to empty the teat
- Repeat this process until your baby shows signs of fullness. A bottle feed should last at least between 10 and 15 minutes, just like the breast.
