Baby's development at week 14 of pregnancy

At week 14 of pregnancy, your baby is going through a period of rapid growth and development. Here is a summary of what is happening inside:

Baby's size and weight

At this point, your baby is around 9 centimetres long from head to bottom and weighs around 45 grams, almost the size of a lemon!

Organ development

Your baby's vital organs continue to develop quickly. Their heart is pumping blood, the kidneys are producing urine and the intestines are starting to work. Their brain is also growing at a fast pace and the bones are beginning to harden.

Foetal movement

Although you may not be able to feel your baby's movements yet, they are starting to move actively inside the womb. They can make reflex movements, such as bending their arms and legs and turning their head from side to side.

Facial development

Your baby's face is taking shape, with more defined features. The eyes are in the right position, although they are still closed, and the nose and mouth are more visible. The ears are also starting to move to their final position on the sides of the head.

Lanugo and chorionic villi

During this week, the lanugo, a fine hair that covers your baby's skin, starts to develop, along with the chorionic villi in the placenta, which help to provide your baby with nutrients and oxygen.

Symptoms at week 14 of pregnancy

During week 14 of pregnancy, you may experience a number of common symptoms associated with this stage of pregnancy. Here are some of the symptoms you might experience:

Nausea and vomiting: Although nausea and vomiting are likely to have eased compared with the first weeks of pregnancy, you may still experience them occasionally.

Increased appetite: You may notice an increase in your appetite as your body works hard to provide nutrients for both you and your growing baby.

Fatigue: Although extreme fatigue may have eased, you may still feel tired or exhausted, especially if you have trouble falling asleep at night.

Changes in your breasts: Your breasts may continue to grow larger and become more sensitive as your body prepares for breastfeeding.

Pelvic pain: You may experience mild pain in the lower abdomen and the pelvis as your ligaments stretch to accommodate the growth of your uterus.

Mood changes: You may experience mood changes, including moments of happiness and others of irritability or emotional sensitivity.

Remember that every woman and every pregnancy are different, so you may experience some of these symptoms, all of them or none at all. If you experience worrying symptoms or symptoms that significantly interfere with your quality of life, do not hesitate to talk to your doctor.

Risks at week 14 of pregnancy

At week 14 of pregnancy, the second trimester is generally a stage of greater stability and fewer symptoms such as nausea and fatigue. However, there are still some risks that are important to keep in mind in order to guarantee the healthy development of the baby and the wellbeing of the mother. During this period, although the risk of miscarriage decreases considerably, other possible risk factors such as infections, problems with the cervix or high blood pressure should be monitored.

It is advisable to pay special attention to signs such as bleeding or intense discomfort in the abdomen, as they may indicate a complication that requires medical attention. In addition, proper medical follow-up and healthy habits such as a balanced diet and moderate exercise are essential to reduce risks and ensure a safe pregnancy.

How does the mum-to-be feel at week 14 of pregnancy?

At week 14 of pregnancy, the mum-to-be may experience a wide range of emotions as her body and mind adapt to the changes of pregnancy. For many women, reaching this milestone in their pregnancy can be a cause for joy and excitement, as they are getting closer to meeting their baby. This period can also be marked by a sense of relief, especially if they have overcome the challenges of the first trimester, such as morning sickness and extreme fatigue.

However, alongside the joy and the anticipation, it is also common to experience some anxiety or worry. This can be especially true for first-time mums, who may feel overwhelmed by the number of changes they are experiencing and by the responsibility of caring for a new life.

In addition, if there have been complications in previous pregnancies or if there are risk factors in the current pregnancy, these worries can intensify.

Hormonal changes can also influence the mum-to-be's mood, which can lead to emotional fluctuations. She may feel more sensitive or emotional than usual, and it is important to recognise and accept these changes as a natural part of the process.

With this in mind, it is essential that the mum-to-be takes time to look after her emotional wellbeing. This may involve seeking emotional support from friends, family or support groups, as well as spending time on activities that bring her calm and tranquillity, such as meditation, yoga or simply taking a moment to relax and breathe deeply.

At Happymami, we want you to feel supported and informed at every step of this journey. From preparing for birth to caring for your newborn, we are here to offer you support and to help you with any questions you may have through our consultations.
