Baby's development at week 8 of pregnancy

In the exciting week 8 of your pregnancy, you are witnessing a key stage in your baby's development. At 8 weeks, your baby has gone from being an embryo to a foetus, a major milestone that marks the beginning of a period of rapid growth and development. Although they are still tiny, about the size of a berry, every part of their body is forming and perfecting itself.

Your baby's arms and legs are growing more every day, and they now have elbows and wrists that will soon begin to flex. The hands and feet are developing, with the fingers starting to form, although they may still be joined by thin membranes.

Your baby's heart, which started beating just a few weeks ago, now beats at a more regular rhythm and can be detected on ultrasound scans, offering an exciting and reassuring sound that symbolises the new life taking shape.

As for their head, it is growing to accommodate the rapid development of the brain. Facial features are also emerging, with the formation of the eyelids, nose and ears, outlining the little face you will soon be eager to see.

We know that this is a time of great expectations and, sometimes, anxiety. We want to encourage you to trust the wonderful process your body is carrying out. You are creating a perfect environment for your baby to grow and develop, nourished by your love and care.

We invite you to take this time to connect with your baby, perhaps by talking to them gently or simply stroking your bump. These small actions not only help you strengthen your bond, but also remind you of the miracle you are carrying inside.

We want you to feel confident, informed and, above all, very supported. Whatever question you have, whatever concern arises, we are here to help you navigate it with love and professionalism. Your wellbeing and your baby's are our top priority, and together we will celebrate every stage of this beautiful journey into motherhood.

Symptoms at week 8 of pregnancy

As you reach week 8 of your pregnancy, you are moving through a significant period of change and development, both for your baby and for you. At this stage, you may experience a variety of symptoms, a reflection of the intense biological processes taking place inside you.

During week 8, it is common to feel more pronounced fatigue. Your body is working hard, using a considerable amount of energy to support your baby's growth, especially now that foetal development is at a critical stage. It is important that you allow yourself to rest and recover when you need to, listening to the signals your body sends you.

Morning sickness, which can appear at any time of day, is still common for many women at this stage. Although it can be challenging, finding small meals that your stomach can tolerate and staying properly hydrated will help you ease this symptom.

You may also notice increased sensitivity in your breasts, which can feel fuller and tender to the touch. This is your body's natural preparation for future breastfeeding, and finding a comfortable bra with good support can bring you relief.

What is more, hormonal changes can contribute to a fluctuating mood. You may find yourself feeling a wide range of emotions, from joy to anxiety or sadness. It is important to remember that these mood swings are completely normal and that it is healthy to seek support and share your feelings.

You may also notice that you need to wee more often, as your growing uterus begins to put more pressure on your bladder. Although it can be a little annoying, it is a sign that your body is adapting to accommodate your growing baby.

Remember, looking after yourself is also looking after your baby, so don't hesitate to ask for help and take time for your wellbeing. Together, we will make this journey into motherhood an experience full of love, support and understanding.

If you don't want to miss the exciting path of pregnancy, we invite you to follow our Happymami pregnancy calendar. We are here to help you on this adventure!

At week 8, your baby's development is very rapid, but there are still risks to bear in mind. One of the main risks is miscarriage, which is more common during the first trimester. Some warning signs may include vaginal bleeding, intense cramps or the absence of typical pregnancy symptoms. In addition, there are risks related to embryonic development, such as growth problems. With any alarming symptom, it is important to seek medical help to ensure a healthy pregnancy.

You may experience an overwhelming sense of wonder and connection with the little being growing inside you. As your pregnancy becomes more real, you may begin to imagine what your baby will be like, dreaming about the future and forming a deep emotional bond even before you meet your little one.

At the same time, worries and anxieties commonly arise. Questions about your health and your baby's, how your life will change and how you will adapt to your new role as a mother can fill your mind. These worries are a natural part of preparing for the great responsibility of caring for a new life.

You may also feel heightened emotional sensitivity, with mood swings that take you from joy to tears in an instant. These ups and downs are driven by the hormonal changes taking place in your body to support the pregnancy and are completely normal.

Listening to your body is essential now. It is working diligently, not only to maintain your own vital needs, but also to create and nourish a new life. Nausea, often called "morning sickness", can continue to be your companion during this time. Small meals, healthy snacks throughout the day and staying hydrated can be simple but effective ways to ease nausea.

Balanced nutrition remains a key pillar for your wellbeing and your baby's. Even though nausea can make eating a challenge, trying to include a variety of nutritious foods in your diet will ensure that you both get the essential nutrients for healthy development.

Emotional support during this stage cannot be underestimated. Hormonal changes can make your emotions more intense, and sharing your experiences, your joys and your worries with people you trust can bring you great relief and strength.

Is it normal not to see much change in my body yet?

Yes, it is completely normal. At week 8, many changes are happening internally, but they may not be visible externally yet. Every woman and every pregnancy are unique, so when you start to show a pregnancy bump can vary considerably.

Should I be feeling the baby's movements at this point?

At week 8, your baby is still very small and their movements are subtle, so it is much too early for you to feel them. Most women start to feel the baby's movements, also known as "kicks", between weeks 18 and 25. I have heard about the baby's heartbeat. Can I listen to it now?

Your baby's heart starts beating at around the sixth week of pregnancy, but it is usually possible to hear these beats with a Doppler device at a prenatal appointment at around week 12. However, this can vary from one woman to another.

I am experiencing a lot of nausea. Is there anything I can do to ease it?

Nausea is common in the first trimester. Some strategies that can help include eating small, frequent meals, avoiding the foods or smells that trigger your nausea, staying hydrated and, if necessary, talking to your doctor about treatment options which may include vitamin B6 supplements or anti-nausea medicines that are safe in pregnancy.

What tests or scans should I expect next?

In the early stages of pregnancy, you are likely to have blood and urine tests to check your general health, your blood type and possible infections. An early scan can also be scheduled to confirm the baby's gestational age and to detect multiple pregnancies. It is important to discuss with your doctor any specific tests recommended based on your medical history and individual needs.

What does my baby look like at 8 weeks of pregnancy?

At 8 weeks, the baby measures around 1.6 centimetres and has a shape that resembles a bean. At this stage, the facial features begin to develop, with the appearance of the eyes, nose and mouth. The arms and legs are in the process of forming, and the fingers on the hands and feet can already be distinguished. Although they are still small, their heart is already beating actively.

What does the bump feel like at 8 weeks of pregnancy?

At this stage, many women experience mild discomfort or cramps in the tummy due to the expansion of the uterus and changes in the abdominal tissues. You may feel pressure or tightness, as well as increased sensitivity in the abdominal area. These symptoms are normal and reflect the baby's growth and the adjustments your body is making.

What are the symptoms of week 8 of pregnancy?

  • Significant fatigue due to foetal growth and changes in the body.
  • Morning sickness that may persist, eased by small meals and good hydration.
  • Increased sensitivity in the breasts, which calls for a comfortable bra.
  • Hormonal changes that can cause emotional fluctuations and more frequent urination due to pressure from the uterus.
