Pregnancy week 17: your baby's development

Size and Weight: At week 17 of pregnancy, your baby is now about the size of a large pear. Their average weight is between 150 and 170 grams, and their length may be around 13 to 14 centimetres from crown to rump.

Respiratory system: Although your baby's lungs are still maturing, at this stage the alveoli are already starting to develop, which will allow them to breathe more efficiently once they are born. In the event of a premature birth, they may be able to breathe on their own with minimal assistance.

Skin protection: The fine layer of lanugo still covers your baby's skin, protecting it from the amniotic fluid and helping it stay warm in the uterus. This layer will start to disappear over the coming weeks as the subcutaneous fat develops further.

Reflexes: Your baby's reflexes continue to develop and become more refined. They may already be able to suck their thumb, move their eyes from side to side and respond to external stimuli such as sounds and lights.

Position for Birth: Although most babies can still change position at this stage, some may already have adopted the cephalic position, with their head down, in preparation for birth. However, others may be in a breech or transverse position at this point.

Fat Accumulation: Your baby keeps accumulating fat under the skin, which will help them maintain their body temperature once they are born and give them a plumper, healthier look.

Brain Development: Your baby's brain continues to develop rapidly at this stage. Neural connections are multiplying, preparing them for future learning and experiences outside the uterus.

Digestive system: Although your baby has been swallowing amniotic fluid, their digestive system is still developing. It is getting ready to process breast milk or formula once they are born and start feeding outside the uterus.

Pregnancy week 17: symptoms

At week 17 of pregnancy, you may experience a range of symptoms that are common at this stage of pregnancy. Below are some of the symptoms you might experience:

Increased appetite: You may notice an increase in your appetite as your baby continues to grow and needs more nutrients for their development.

Skin changes: Some women may experience skin changes, such as dark patches on the face known as melasma or the dark line that runs from the navel to the pubic bone, called the linea alba.

Constipation: Constipation is common during pregnancy due to hormones and the growing uterus, which can slow down the digestive system.

Swelling: You may notice swelling in different parts of your body, such as your hands, feet and face, due to fluid retention.

Back pain: As your uterus grows and your centre of gravity shifts, back pain is common, especially in the lower back.

Foetal movements: During this stage, you may start to feel your baby's movements more clearly, which can be exciting and reassuring.

Dizziness or fainting: Changes in blood pressure and blood flow can cause some women to become dizzy or faint during the second trimester.

Increased vaginal discharge: You may notice an increase in vaginal discharge, which is normal during pregnancy and helps to prevent infections.

Remember that every woman and every pregnancy are different, so you may experience some of these symptoms or none at all. If you have any concerns about a symptom you are experiencing, do not hesitate to consult your doctor or midwife.

How does the mum-to-be feel at week 17?

At week 17 of pregnancy, the mum-to-be may experience a wide range of emotions. For many women, this stage brings a jumble of conflicting feelings. On the one hand, she may feel deep excitement and joy at reaching this phase of her pregnancy, as she gets ever closer to the halfway point of this beautiful journey towards motherhood. Your baby's movements, which become more noticeable at this stage, can strengthen this emotional bond even further, allowing the mother to feel more connected to her unborn child.

However, along with the excitement, it is common to feel anxiety and worry. Mums-to-be may worry about the health and wellbeing of their baby, about the birth process and about what life will be like after giving birth. These worries can lead to moments of emotional fatigue, as pregnancy can be overwhelming both physically and mentally.

In addition, pregnancy brings significant physical changes, which can affect a woman's self-image. As the body transforms to make room for the baby's growth, some women may become more self-conscious about their appearance and experience feelings of insecurity or discomfort.

Despite these emotional challenges, many women also find a sense of empowerment and confidence as they adapt to the changes that pregnancy brings. This stage can be an opportunity to explore inner strength and the ability to face the challenges of pregnancy and motherhood.
