In short: for a newborn, look for a soft, wide-based, slow-flow teat, an anti-colic system that is easy to clean, BPA-free materials and a small size (around 150 ml). Our first choice is the custom-designed Happymami bottle; Suavinex, Philips Avent, NUK and Chicco also make good models, depending on what you need.

A list made by midwives

In our role as midwives and mums, we present you with a carefully selected list of the best bottles available on the market. We understand how crucial it is to make an informed decision when choosing the best bottle for your baby, and that is why we have assessed each option based on a series of key criteria that we consider fundamental for parents' decisions. The order in this list has been determined by the scores obtained on these criteria, thus ensuring an objective presentation based on the available information.

We have worked with trusted midwives to identify the best bottles on the market

The 6 criteria we use to score each bottle

  • Acceptance rate: We consider how closely the bottle resembles each mother's breast, as well as the follow-up carried out to ensure maximum acceptance for both the baby and the mum.
  • Colic prevention: We assess the effectiveness of the anti-colic systems in each bottle and their ability to reduce the baby's discomfort during feeding.
  • Breastfeeding protection: We analyse how each bottle prevents the confusion factor between the teat of the bottle and the mother's nipple, thus ensuring the protection and continuity of breastfeeding.
  • Comfort and ease of use: We examine the general ergonomics of the bottle, how easy it is to clean and its dishwasher compatibility, as well as assessing how simple it is to assemble, to give parents a comfortable and practical experience.
  • Safe materials: We prioritise bottles made with non-toxic materials that are safe for the baby, guaranteeing their health and well-being during feeding.
  • Heat resistance: We assess the compatibility of each bottle with sterilisers, bottle warmers and microwaves, to ensure durability and usefulness over time.

Design my bottle

1. Custom-designed Happymami bottle

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(6 points/ 6 possible)

A unique concept in the world that is revolutionising the world of bottles. A project created by Spanish midwives that allows every mother to design a bottle that is as close as possible to her breast.

The only bottle custom-designed for your baby

250 ml Happymami bottle with a green ring and measuring scale, held in one hand

Happymami acceptance rate

Undoubtedly the most widely accepted bottle on the market, both for breastfeeding and formula, for three reasons.

  1. You custom-design the bottle that is closest to your breast, so your baby will have a feed as similar as possible to your breastfeeding. If you do not breastfeed, you design it taking your baby's needs into account.
  2. When you receive your custom-designed Happymami, you receive guidelines on how to give the feeds.
  3. You have Clara, our virtual midwife, who helps you with bottle acceptance at any time (she has been trained with more than 100,000 conversations with mums), and our WhatsApp community, where Manuel, midwife and founder of Happymami, answers your questions.

Happymami colic prevention

All Happymami teats have a double anti-colic system built in, thus achieving the best result.

  • They work in any position
  • Easy to clean, as they do not need extra parts or special brushes for cleaning
  • You can easily see the amount of milk, unlike using a bag to collect the milk.

Happymami breastfeeding protection

A unique bottle for each unique mum, a revolutionary concept with which you prevent your baby from the confusion factor, protecting your breastfeeding. Because not all breasts are the same, using a custom-designed bottle will protect your breastfeeding better.

In Happymami's own research with more than 1,680 mothers, presented at the IHAN Spain Congress 2024, the personalised bottle achieved 94.3% acceptance and 97.4% breastfeeding protection, assessed both in clinic and at home.

Happymami comfort and ease of use

Easy to use, ergonomic design with a wide opening so you can put your whole hand inside to clean it. No extra parts that make cleaning difficult, fully dishwasher-safe.

Happymami safe materials

Both the teat and the bottle body are made of the highest quality silicone. Free from BPA, BPS, BPF and if it falls, it does not break as glass might.

2. Suavinex ZeroZero

4 out of 6 points

Within Suavinex's range of bottles, we highlight the ZeroZero. A benchmark in novelty with many strengths that make it a very interesting bottle

Suavinex ZeroZero acceptance rate

They opt for a slanted teat design, longer than conventional teats and with a domed base, which makes this bottle different, to say the least. In terms of acceptance, being a generic bottle different from your breast and with such a long teat, the stimulation of your baby's palate will probably be different, making acceptance more difficult. What is more, they have no post or pre-purchase follow-up, leaving the mum aside after buying the bottle.

Suavinex ZeroZero colic prevention

With a very interesting proposition, the ZeroZero bottles come with a bag inside, into which we pour the milk; it prevents air from entering and contracts at the pace at which the baby sucks.

Bear in mind that this bag does not let you see how much milk is left, and the material turns yellow in a short period of time.

Suavinex ZeroZero breastfeeding protection

With such a long teat, it produces a very strong stimulation of the baby's palate, so if you have a smaller nipple, your baby may suffer from the confusion factor, affecting your breastfeeding.

Suavinex ZeroZero comfort and ease of use

Ergonomic design, with the slanted teat that makes feeds comfortable. Easy to clean, except for the anti-colic bag, which needs a special clean and turns yellow easily.

Suavinex ZeroZero safe materials

100% silicone teat and rigid bottle body.

Suavinex ZeroZero heat resistance

Compatible with bottle warmers, sterilisers and microwaves.

3. Philips Avent Natural Response

4 out of 6 points

This is the new version of the Philips Avent Natural bottle, focused on keeping the texture they had and adding a variable flow, which is a very interesting trend when choosing a bottle. Let's take a closer look!

Philips Avent Natural Response bottle with milk

Philips Avent Natural Response acceptance rate.

This is a generic bottle with a wide, soft and flexible teat. A design that seeks to imitate the shape of the breast, but that offers a single teat shape, which makes it difficult to adapt to each situation, and as we well know, 60% of babies will reject generic bottles and more than 50% of those who use a generic bottle lose breastfeeding (Happymami's own research with more than 1,680 mothers, presented at the IHAN Spain Congress 2024). They have no post or pre-purchase follow-up, leaving the mum aside after buying the bottle.

Philips Avent Natural Response colic prevention

Philips Avent, in their previous designs, opted for anti-colic devices that required brushes and extra parts. But in this case they return to the simple and equally functional: a valve in the teat that works just like other more complex systems. It is true that the valve is in a single position, which "forces" us to always give the feed with the bottle in the correct position.

Philips Avent Natural Response breastfeeding protection

To prevent the teat-nipple confusion factor in the newborn, the best thing is to use the bottle that is most similar to the mother's breast in each case, so this generic model will not be the right one in such a case.

Philips Avent Natural Response comfort and ease of use

Available in several sizes, it can adapt to each situation; what is more, changing the anti-colic system to make it simpler and equally useful keeps them on a good track.

Teat made of BPA-free silicone, rigid bottle body.

Philips Avent Natural Response heat resistance

Compatible with bottle warmers, sterilisers and microwaves.

4. NUK Perfect Match

4 out of 6 points

Within the NUK brand, we highlight the Perfect Match, its most searched-for bottle today, which takes the place in this list of the Nature Sense from previous editions.

NUK Perfect Match acceptance rate

According to the brand, its teat adapts to the baby's palate. Even so, it is still a generic teat, the same for every baby and different from your breast, so it is not more accepted than other generic bottles.

NUK Perfect Match colic prevention

It has an anti-colic valve built into the teat.

NUK Perfect Match breastfeeding protection

If your breast is not like the teat of the bottle, there is a risk that your baby will suffer from the confusion factor and you will lose breastfeeding.

NUK Perfect Match comfort and ease of use

It has a temperature indicator on the bottle body, which is very useful especially when you are a first-time mum, and it comes in several sizes.

NUK Perfect Match safe materials

Polypropylene bottle body.

NUK Perfect Match heat resistance

Compatible with sterilisers.

5. Chicco Natural Feeling

4 out of 6 points

This is a bottle recognised by everyone, with a characteristic design that we are going to assess below.

150 ml Chicco Natural Feeling bottle

Chicco Natural Feeling acceptance rate

Chicco has followed the trend of slanted generic bottles, an innovation in its day, but one that has not been entirely successful, since, besides being a generic teat different from your breast, the slanted shape means the baby grips it differently from the way they do at the breast, making acceptance more difficult.

Chicco Natural Feeling colic prevention

It has a double anti-colic valve on each side of the teat, which helps prevent air intake, reducing colic. Easy to clean and it works in any position.

Teat of the Chicco Natural Feeling bottle with a double valve

Chicco Natural Feeling breastfeeding protection

Starting from the basis that we are talking about a generic teat that causes greater rejection of the mother's breast, on their website they do not mention how to protect breastfeeding either. It is true that, personally, when a brand talks about the "transition from breast to bottle", it really makes you think they were not thinking about protecting breastfeeding.

Chicco Natural Feeling comfort and ease of use

Bottle with a wide opening, easy to clean, which has a slanted teat that will let you give the feed easily, favouring a correct position of the baby's neck.

Chicco Natural Feeling safe materials

It has a rigid bottle body and the teat material is 100% hygienic and flexible silicone, with a non-slip texture, BPA-free, the bottle body is made of rigid polypropylene.

Chicco Natural Feeling heat resistance

Compatible with bottle warmers, sterilisers and microwaves

Bottle for a newborn: what to look for

If you are looking for a bottle for a newborn, check these points before the brand:

  • Slow flow: in the first few weeks, a slow-flow teat lets your baby set the pace of the feed. Medium flow usually comes at around 3 months and fast flow after 6, but watch your baby more than their age: if they choke, the flow is too fast; if they get cross and tired, it may be too slow.
  • Teat shape: soft and wide-based, so they can open their mouth wide. If you breastfeed or combine breast and bottle, the more the teat resembles your breast, the better; that is the idea behind the custom-designed Happymami bottle.
  • Simple anti-colic system: ideally built into the teat or with few parts, so that limiting air does not make cleaning harder.
  • Small size: around 150 ml is enough for the first few weeks; the 250 ml one will come when feeds get bigger. We guide you in how much milk in a bottle by age.
  • Easy to clean: wide neck and few parts. Sterilise only the first time, 5 minutes in boiling water; after that, soap and water or the dishwasher is enough (how to sterilise bottles).
  • Safe materials: BPA-free. Silicone is light and does not break if dropped.

The Happymami bottle comes in a 150 ml version with slow, medium or fast-flow teats. How you give it matters too: your baby almost sitting up, the bottle almost horizontal and pauses during the feed. We explain it in how to bottle-feed a baby.

Which bottle do paediatricians recommend?

Paediatricians and midwives rarely recommend a specific brand: they look at criteria. For a newborn, these are usually the same ones you have just seen: a soft, slow-flow teat, a small size, safe materials, easy cleaning and an unhurried way of giving the bottle, at your baby's pace.

If you breastfeed, a teat as similar as possible to your breast is best, which is why we put the custom-designed Happymami bottle first in this list. For everyday questions you have Clara, our virtual midwife, and our WhatsApp community; if something about your baby worries you (they refuse feeds, are not gaining weight or seem unwell), talk to their paediatrician.

What is the best bottle brand?

Choosing the best bottle brand is subjective and may depend on the individual needs and preferences of parents and babies. On the market there are many well-known brands that offer a wide range of bottles with diverse features. What may work for one family or baby may not be the best option for another.

In this post we have talked about 5 very well-known brands, but to write it we reviewed almost all the available options. As you have seen, each of these brands has its own strengths and unique features.

In pharmacies and baby shops you will also find MAM (Easy Start Anti-Colic), Dr. Brown's, Tommee Tippee, Medela (Calma) and Lansinoh: wide ranges, with generic teats of different shapes and different anti-colic systems (vented base, valve in the teat or internal tube).

It is important to consider factors such as compatibility with breastfeeding, colic prevention, ease of cleaning, ergonomics and safety when choosing a bottle brand. What is more, personal preferences and the specific needs of your baby will also play an important role in the choice.

Which bottle is most similar to the nipple?

Every mum is unique and has a particular breast and nipple shape, so the bottle most similar to the nipple is a custom-designed Happymami. That way you can get the bottle that is most representative of your anatomy, preventing the confusion factor and protecting your breastfeeding.

Experiences of mums and dads

We have reviewed reviews and opinions from real parents who have used these bottles with their babies, which has given us a practical perspective on their performance in real situations.

Ultimately, our selection is based on providing you with valuable and balanced information so that you can make the best decision for your baby and your unique situation.
